This Week’s Show

Segment 1: Week in Review, Habs News, League News

  • The Laval Rocket have signed forward Yannick Veilleux to a one-year, one-way AHL contract for the 2020-21 season. Veilleux had a productive season, picking up 20 points in 26 games for the Rocket.
  • Cayden Primeau was named to the AHL’s All-Rookie team. Primeau posted a record of 17-11-3 with four shutouts in his rookie campaign.
  • Noah Juulsen spoke with the media via a conference call this week, providing an update on his status in the process and how the current pandemic has impacted his training.
  • Top 2020 NHL Draft prospect, Marco Rossi, won the OHL’s most outstanding player award. Rossi compiled 120 points in just 56 games played for the Ottawa 67’s.
  • The Impact of the Coronavirus on the sporting world.

Segment 2: The Big Topic

  • The NHL have been adamant that they are leaving nothing off the table as it pertains to a resumption of play for this NHL season. This week, the 24-team format gained significant traction and the NHL and NHLPA have been working on that format for a potential return to play. This format would see the top four teams in each conference get byes through the play-in tournament, while teams who would traditionally be on the outside looking in, like Montreal, would get an opportunity to participate.
  • The Habs inclusion in this format has some NHLers concerned about the prospect of playing a fresher Carey Price in a best-of-three games series, as Larry Brooks of the New York Post pointed out that Price’s reputation has rival teams hoping for the play-in round to be a best-of-five to “temper the impact of a hot goaltender”.
  • What hurdles remain for a return to play after the executive board of the NHLPA voted to authorize more negotiations on this format? Rick and Joe discuss what issues still need to be negotiated and what they think of the format.

This Week’s Show

Segment 1: Week in Review, Habs News, League News

  • The Canadiens have come to terms on an entry-level deal with forward Arsen Khisamutdinov. Khisamutdinov was a sixth-round selection by the Habs in the 2019 NHL Draft.
  • The Habs top prospect on the backend, Alexander Romanov, has signed a long-term contract of sorts, getting engaged to his girlfriend.
  • The Bruins came to terms on a one-year contract extension with goaltender Jaroslav Halak.
  • The Blackhawks have fired their long-time President and CEO, John McDonough, after thirteen years and three Stanley Cups. The guys ponder who could possibly replace an executive with such pedigree.
  • Tomas Plekanec did an interview with Louis Jean in which he shared that he would like to get into coaching, while also using two of his former coaches as his sources of inspiration and one coach that he said he would not emulate.
  • Former Montreal Canadiens tough guy, Georges Laraque tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this week.
  • Kirk Muller’s mother, Annette went viral this week with a photo of her holding up a sign that said “Need More Wine” against her window.
  • The NHL and NHLPA released a joint statement detailing their plans for “Phase 2” in which players could return to small group activities in the “mid-to-later” part of May, while also saying that the Return to Play Committee will continue to meet on a regular basis.
  • Phillip Danault believes it would be “inhumane” to ask players to be separated from their families for two-to-three months, should the NHL season resume.
Segment 2: The Big Topic
  • TSN composed an All-Time Montreal Canadiens team in a project they have dubbed the “All-Time 7 Project” in which they will do the same for each Canadian team. Given the Canadiens illustrious history, it is a tall order to pick just 21 players, but they did. Of course, their selections have led to some Canadiens fans asking why certain players were omitted. Rick and Joe take a look at the team and ask who should be added that is not present and which players should not have made the cut.

Segment 1: Week in Review, Habs News, League News

  • The Canadiens have signed goaltender Vasily Demchenko to a one-year, two-way contract.
  • Defenceman Alexei Marchenko is not going to sign an extension with his KHL club, CSKA Moscow. The Canadiens are reportedly a team that are interested in his services.
  • Eric Engels said based on his information that it is “all but assured” Ilya Kovalchuk will be back with the Habs next season. The guys discuss the possibility of the 37-year-old returning to the club.
  • In a conference call, Brendan Gallagher touched on the idea of signing a contract extension with the Canadiens, also saying that he didn’t believe that negotiations would become a distraction.
  • The NHL has floated around the idea of holding the Draft before awarding the Stanley Cup. After the NFL draft this week, Rick and Joe discuss what the NHL could have learned from how the NFL handled their draft.

Segment 2: The Big Topic

  • As the NHL has insisted over the last few weeks, they are looking at all possible options for resumption of play. One of the options that was discussed this week was Hub Cities where games would be played in NHL cities that have not been hit too hard by the Coronavirus. The desire for games to be played in NHL arenas is what makes this idea more intriguing than some of the neutral sites that have been discussed in previous weeks.
