Segment 1: Week in Review, Habs News, League News

  • The Flyers won the first round series against the Canadiens in six games. Joe recaps the series. 
  • In the midst of the series against the Flyers, there were two major incidents that took place in Game 5. Jesperi Kotkaniemi was ejected early in the 2nd period of that game for boarding Travis Sanheim. Later on, Matt Niskanen cross-checked Brendan Gallagher in the face that went unpenalized. The Canadiens tweeted a closeup angle of the hit on Twitter to put pressure on the league to suspend Niskanen, especially with Gallagher suffering a broken jaw. But Alain Vigneault created controversy by questioning the severity of the injury. 
  • They Said What? Marc Bergevin and Alain Vigneault comment on the Gallagher injury before Game 6. Reactions from Price, Weber, Hart, Vigneault and Muller after the series wrapped up. Price gives Muller credit for his job as interim head coach. 
  • Dale Hawerchuk passed away this week at the age of 57 after a battle with stomach cancer. Rick and Joe pay tribute to the legend. 

Segment 2: Bergevin’s End of Season Review

  • Following the Canadiens being eliminated on Friday night, the Canadiens GM, Marc Bergevin, spoke with the media on Saturday. He talked about a wide range of topics including the experience this run gave to the Habs young players, an update on Gallagher’s injury, Price and Weber’s phenomenal play and much more! Rick and Joe react to his press conference. 
  • Chuck Fletcher gave credit to the Canadiens for their play in the Playoffs and shared a different view of this off-season than Marc Bergevin did.

Segment 1: Week in Review, Habs News, League News 

  • Canadiens prospect defenceman, Mattias Norlinder, signed a two-year contract with Frolunda of the SHL. 
  • Forwards Konstantin Okulov and Dmitrij Jaskin signed extensions with their respective KHL clubs, Okulov with CSKA Moscow and Jaskin with Dynamo Moscow. Okulov and Jaskin were players that the Habs had some interest in. 
  • The Winnipeg Jets and Dustin Byfuglien came to a mutual agreement to terminate the defenceman’s contract on Friday. 
  • Former Habs defenceman, Marco Scandella, signed a four-year extension with the St. Louis Blues. 
  • Gary Bettman said the NHL is looking to be “flexible and agile” in their attempt to complete the 2019-2020 season. Bettman also noted they were looking for a way that would be fair to teams that were on the bubble. 
  • If the NHL season were to return, Tomas Tatar said in a conference call that he has recovered from the upper-body injury that he suffered before the NHL season was paused. 
  • Former Habs defenceman Andrei Markov announced his retirement from professional hockey earlier this week. This came after last week when it was revealed he would not be signing an extension with Lokomotiv of the KHL.

  • Rick and Joe take a look back at the questions they asked at the beginning of the season that focused on the major concerns heading into the season. With the 71 games the Canadiens played this season, the guys look back on how pertinent those questions and concerns were for this year’s team.

Segment 1: Week in Review, Habs News, League News

  • Former Habs defenceman Andrei Markov is not expected to return to his current KHL club Lokomotiv for next season. Will the 41-year-old be headed for retirement.
  • Habs forward Charles Hudon has some clubs in the NLA and KHL interested in his services, according to his agent Allain Roy. Roy believes the time could be right for the soon-to-be 26-year-old to make the jump overseas.
  • The Canadiens’ top defensive prospect, Alexander Romanov, could be on his way to Montreal soon and Trevor Timmins provided some insight on both Romanov’s game and his personality.
  • In interviews this week, NHL Commisioner Gary Bettman and Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly asserted that the NHL is still hopeful to “salvage the season.” In an appearance on Tim & Sid, Daly said the NHL has yet to establish a “drop-dead date” where the 2019-20 season must be cancelled.
  • One of the avenues that has been considered for a potential resumption of play is neutral sites for games. without fans. Sites that have been discussed are Grand Forks, North Dakota, Manchester, New Hampshire and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Daly added that no neutral site has been vetted by the NHL.
  • Habs coach Claude Julien is preparing for the resumption of play. In an article in the Athletic, Julien discussed how the prospect of a March Madness style tournament for the Playoffs, in which the Canadiens would be included.
  • Paul Byron gave his thoughts on Marc Bergevin in a Q&A with Sportsnet.
  • Cole Caufield is looking forward to his next season at Wisconsin and being “dominant” at the collegiate level.
  • TSN’s Craig Button did a simulated lottery in which the Canadiens’ won big in the lottery and moved up six slots to the second overall pick and snagged Quinton Byfield.

  • The guys take a look at the NHL Broadcast Rankings that considered the thoughts of both the opinions of locals and non-locals and give their thoughts on the poll that had the Canadiens finish in the top ten for having a well-regarded broadcast team doing their regional games on TSN.
  • In response to this poll, Rick and Joe talk about their personal favourite broadcasters in hockey and across the sporting world.

  • The Canadiens made another signing this week, agreeing to terms with recently acquired forward, Laurent Dauphin, on a one-year, two-way contract.
  • Results of the 2019-2020 NHLPA Player Poll were released earlier this week. Carey Price was voted as the best goaltender in the league, receiving 41% of the vote, Tomas “Tuna” Tatar was voted for best nickname and the Bell Centre was voted as having the best ice in the league.
  • The Coronavirus continues to impact the world and the NHL is no different. It was revealed this week that four additional members of the Ottawa Senators have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing their total to six.
  • P.K. Subban and Brian Burke gave their thoughts on a revised Playoff format and draft lottery.
  • When will pro sports return? Rick and Joe ask the question on every sports fan’s mind.
  • The Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation has announced donations of $1.1 million to help 73 orgnaizations that work for the well-being of underprivileged children in Quebec.
  • Ken Dryden wrote a poem about COVID-19.

Segment 1: Week in Review, Habs News, League News 

  • The Canadiens played in a pair of games this week, they were both losing efforts to the Panthers and Predators. Rick and Joe briefly recap those games and discuss the scheduled game against Buffalo that was postponed on Thursday, along with the other 9 games scheduled for that night. 
  • Some news on the injury front, Jesperi Kotkaniemi suffered a spleen injury and is set to miss the remainder of this season. Tomas Tatar, who had been dealing with an uppe body injury was announced to be out indefinitely. Jonathan Drouin was prepared to return, which led to the re-assigning of Lukas Vejdemo to Laval. 
  • Cole Caufield’s season at Wisconsin has come to an end. With his Badger teammates K’Andre Miller and Alex Turcotte signing their Entry Level Contracts, the focus has shifted to Caufield and where he will head next season. 
  • Claude Julien noted that he believed rookie forward Nick Suzuki had hit a wall. The guys discuss another comment made by the coach towards his players.
  • The Coronavirus has obviously been at the forefront this week. Following the NBA suspending their season Wednesday night, after Utah Jazz center, Rudy Gobert, tested positive for Coronavirus, the NHL and just about every other sports league followed suit the following day in postponing, suspending or cancelling major sporting events. Rick and Joe discuss everything surrounding these shocking events. 

Segment 2: The Big Topic

  • Rick and Joe are joined by Mike who was in Vancouver this past June for the NHL Entry Draft with the Rocket Sports Media group, as one of the contest winners! The guys talk with Mike about the experience of the draft, his early hockey memories and much, much more.

Segment 1: Week in Review, Habs News, League News 

  • The Canadiens played three games this week, picking up a pair of wins against the Carolina Hurricanes and New York Islanders, while dropping a game to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Rick and Joe discuss the week that was for the Habs.
  • There was some sad news Friday morning regarding Habs legend Henri Richard. He passed away at the age of 84. The guys pay tribute to the Canadiens legend who holds the NHL record for most Stanley Cups won with 11. 
  • NHL Commisioner, Gary Bettman, met with the media to discuss a wide range of topics, including the NHL’s policy on the Coronavirus, the Salary Cap and some potential rule changes.
  • It was another eventful week on the injury front for the Canadiens. Forwards, Tomas Tatar and Brendan Gallagher did not take part in the Habs 4-0 loss to the Lightning, Gallagher suffering from the flu, while Tatar was sent back to Montreal to be evaluated. The Canadiens recalled Lukas Vejdemo from the Laval Rocket on an emergency basis due to the Tatar injury. Meanwhile, in Laval, Jesse Ylonen is not ready to play just yet, while Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Ryan Poehling are injured. 
  • Marc Bergevin has been making quite a few media appearances over the last week, giving his perspective on the rather disappointing season for his club. In an interview with Renaud Lavoie, it was announced that Claude Julien would be returning behind the bench next season. In his 31 Thoughts article, Eliotte Friedman shared quotes from an interview he had with Bergevin.

Segment 2: The Big Topic

  • Who is responsible for this season’s shortcomings for the Montreal Canadiens? With the head coach and GM both returning next season, and placing a hefty amount of the blame on the players, Rick and Joe take a closer look at this season and what has let the Canadiens down this season. Some problem items have been the team’s propensity to give up leads late in games, their home record and backup goaltending, just to name a few. 
  • Who might be the fall guy for this season should there be one? Kirk Muller? Trevor Timmins? As Bergevin hinted last week perhaps it will be a player, most likely a forward, in an attempt to acquire help on the blueline.

This Week’s Show

Segment 1: Week in Review, Habs News, League News 

  • The Canadiens were in action three times this week. They visited the Senators in Ottawa and picked up a 3-0 win, before dropping two games against the Canucks and Rangers, in which they jumped out to an early two-goal lead before allowing both teams to come from behind and win the game. 
  • There were some great good news stories that came out of this week around the NHL. David Ayres’ captivated the imaginations of people around the world with his performance as an emergency backup goaltender, Bobby Ryan scored a hat-trick in his first game back in Ottawa since he went to the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program, and Jay Bouwmeester returned to St. Louis and received a lovely ovation following his cardiac episode in Anaheim. 
  • News on the injury front just keeps coming for the Montreal Canadiens. Victor Mete is out for the remainder of the season after suffering a foot fracture. Jonathan Drouin continues to deal with an ankle injury, while Xavier Ouellet is close to returning. 
  • The Canadiens recalled Charles Hudon on an emergency basis. Jake Evans was also recalled. Karl Alzner and Xavier Ouellet were sent down, but only as paper transactions to ensure their eligibilty for the AHL Playoffs, should Laval make it. Meanwhile, Canadiens prospect Jesse Ylonen is reportedly set to join the Laval Rocket. 
  • Claude Julien faced some criticism for the load Carey Price has carried this season. He was quick to dismiss the notion when asked about it following the Canadiens loss against the Rangers. He continued to show his frustration with the lack of success, while giving praise to Marc Bergevin, saying his decisions are “strategic”. 

Segment 2: The Big Topic

  • The Trade Deadline has come and gone and the Canadiens were relatively active. They traded Ilya Kovalchuk to Washington for a 3rd the night before the deadline, before trading both Nate Thompson and Nick Cousins on deadline day. 
  • The moves that weren’t made were perhaps more notable, the Canadiens opted to keep both Jeff Petry and Tomas Tatar. Rick and Joe take a look at how Marc Bergevin handled the deadline period and take a listen to some of his comments at his press conference following the deadline.

Blain will miss a few weeks while he is deployed in the North Atlantic with the RCN, and

Matt is deployed overseas with the RCAF, he will make occasional appearances on the show to share his hockey thoughts and flights of fancy.
