Habs prospect report – AHL announced that Cayden Primeau and Otto Leskinen were named to the 2020-21 Canadian Division All-Star Team. Laval Rocket signed forward Cedric Desruisseaux and defenseman Terrance Amorosa to one-year, two-way AHL contracts. Canadiens nearing June 1st deadline to sign three prospects to NHL contracts: Joni Ikonen, Jacob Leguerrier, Kieran Ruscheinski. Roster news – Ben Chiarot had surgery on his right hand on Monday, he will miss 6-8 weeks. Paul Byron cleared waivers on Wednesday. Sean Burke participated in his first practice in his new role on Friday. Habs equipment manager Pierre Gervais recognized for 3000 games.
Habs prospect report – Cole Caufield has been named Big Ten Player of the Year. Caufield scored game tying and game winning goals in semi-finals, but his Badgers lost to the Golden Gophers in the Big Ten championship on Tuesday. Frozen Four Regional participants to be selected on Sunday. Jordan Harris considering joining the Canadiens now that his NCAA season is done. Ryan Poehling is heating up for the Rocket. There have been new members of the Canadiens who have been key additions on the ice and as leaders, the guys react to comments from newcomers Corey Perry and Josh Anderson.
With Ben Chiarot out of the lineup, the Canadiens have been forced to reconfigure their defensive pairings. Rick and Joe discuss how the new look pairings have performed and react to a clip from Shea Weber discussing the adjustments of playing with a new partner. Could the Habs make a move for some help on the blueline?
Overtime losses continue to pile up for the Canadiens, with two more this week they are now 0-9 in extra time. The guys take a look at Dominique Ducharme’s strategy for overtime and discuss slow starts.

Segment 2: GM: Stay the course!

Marc Bergevin spoke to the media this week in his mid-season media availability. He discussed Chiarot’s injury and whether he envisions making a trade to get a replacement for Chiarot, the cap, the team’s prospects, playoffs and the changes to the team under Ducharme. Rick and Joe take a look back at the week that was for the Montreal Canadiens. The Habs picked up three wins this week and currently occupy the top spot in the North division alongside the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Joel Armia was diagnosed with a concussion after a hit from Canucks defenceman Tyler Myers. He will not play Saturday night against Vancouver. Myers avoided supplementary discipline for the questionable hit and will be available to the Canucks.
Paul Byron is game-time decision for Saturday’s game after taking a Shea Weber slapshot on Thursday night.
Corey Perry and Michael Frolik slid into the top-12 at practice on Friday, given the injuries to Armia and Byron, which has cap implications for the Canadiens. Jake Evans reaction to being placed on the taxi squad.
The Laval Rocket opened camp with 32 players in attendance. The Canadiens announced affiliation with the new ECHL franchise in Trois-Rivières.
Canadiens announce hiring of Ben Shutron as an amateur scout.

After our Big Topic segment two weeks ago in which Rick and Joe gave their predictions for which Habs newcomer would make the biggest impact with the club, the guys take an early look at the newbies after five games. We’ve seen Jake Allen between the pipes, we’ve seen Tyler Toffoli and Josh Anderson up front and we’ve seen Joel Edmundson and Alexander Romanov on the back end. Who has impressed the most?

The Canadiens opened their season Wednesday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs, losing 5-4 in overtime.
Noah Juulsen was claimed on waivers earlier this week by the Florida Panthers. Meanwhile, all other Canadiens players who were put through waivers cleared.
The Habs announced five members of their six player taxi squad, which includes Michael Frolik, Corey Perry, Ryan Poehling, Cale Fleury and Charlie Lindgren. Jake Evans was assigned to the taxi squad after the first game for cap reasons.
Rick and Joe share their thoughts on the Habs opening night performance. Who impressed? Who disappointed? How did the newcomers perform? The guys give their thoughts on all of those questions.
Player agent Jeff Jackson tweeted that the NHL doesn’t do enough to protect star players.
They Said What? – Alexander Romanov’s first media availability.
Hockey notes – 27 players test positive for the coronavirus as the season opens. The 2020-21 season is underway, what’s different? NHL opened the season to record TV ratings.

Segment 2: To Dubois or not to Dubois?

This week Columbus Blue Jackets head coach confirmed the reports that centre Pierre-Luc Dubois wants out of Columbus. This alone would be quite enough for Habs fans to start connecting the Quebec-born centre to the Canadiens, but Nick Kypreos poured some gasoline on the fire with his report that the Habs are Dubois’ preferred destination. Blue Jackets ask is now focused around Nick Suzuki plus additional pieces, Alexander Romanov has been deemed untouchable.
We take a look back to the 2016 NHL Draft, the roots of Marc Bergevin’s interest in Pierre-Luc Dubois.
Should the Canadiens trade Suzuki plus additional pieces for Dubois? Jesperi Kotkaniemi? Would Romanov be a better alternative for the Habs to deal?

World Junior Championship report – With group play having come to an end, Rick and Joe give their thoughts on the tournament and players who have stood out to them. They take a deeper look at the play of the three Canadiens prospects involved in the tournament, Kaiden Guhle, Cole Caufield and Jan Mysak.
They Said What? – Michael Frolik and Corey Perry spoke to the media this week after the veteran forwards both signed one-year deals with the Canadiens.
Hockey notes – AHL Board of Governors approve framework for season to begin on February 5th. The Washington Capitals signed Zdeno Chara to a one-year contract. Columbus Blue Jackets re-sign Pierre-Luc Dubois to 2-year contract. NHL will play two outdoor games in Lake Tahoe, Nevada in February, February 20: Colorado Avalanche vs Vegas Golden Knights and February 21: Boston Bruins vs Philadelphia Flyers. P.K. Subban and Lindsay Vonn break up after three years.
