This Week’s Show

Segment 1: Week in Review, Habs News, League News

  • It’s week two without NHL hockey and we are now carefully monitoring the sanity of our co-hosts Rick and Joe.
  • The Canadiens made a pair of signings this week, re-signing Gustav Olofsson to a one-year, two-way contract and signed Jesse Ylonen to his three-year entry-level contract. One has to wonder if Alexander Romanov may be the next one to sign a contract with the club.
  • There was a third positive test for the Coronavirus in the NHL this week, coming from the Colorado Avalanche.
  • We have seen more and more cancellations and postponements across the sporting world this week that included the CHL cancelling the playoffs for their three leagues and the Memorial Cup, the IOC postponing this year’s summer Olympics and the postponement of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft that was set to take place in Montreal.
  • The ECHL and all leagues in the CHL are moving from being suspended to cancelled. Additionally, the IIHF 2020 Men’s World Championships that were set to take place in Switzerland have been cancelled.
  • In NHL 20 simulation news, the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 7-5, pouring some salt on the wound of Leafs fans.
  • The hockey equipment company Bauer has received the green light to begin making protective medical gear for medical staff and first responders.
  • Carey Price and his wife Angela made a $50,000 donation to the Breakfast Club of Canada.
  • There were layoffs made by Group CH.

Segment 2: The Big Topic

  • Who will be the fall guy for this season should there be one, since Marc Bergevin and Claude Julien will both be back? Could it be Trevor Timmins or Kirk Muller shouldering the blame for this season’s shortcomings? Will the change come in the form of a trade? The guys discuss.

Segment 3: Have Your Say

  • Reading your responses to the Canadiens Connection question of the week: How are you coping during the ‘pause’?
  • Listener’s calls and texts

This Week’s Show

Segment 1: Week in Review, Habs News, League News

  • We’re through the first full week without NHL games, Rick and Joe discuss their week without NHL hockey or any sports.
  • Even without any games there was some roster movement for the Canadiens this week. Before NHL rosters were frozen, the club assigned Jake Evans to Laval. Nathaniel Halbert was released from his PTO and Alex Belzile signed a one-year, two-way extension with the club.
  • Cole Caufield will be returning the Wisconsin Badgers next season. After Alex Turcotte and K’Andre Miller signed their Entry Level Contracts, some wondered if Caufield would be headed to the pros as well, but Marc Bergevin and the Canadiens were clear in what they wanted.
  • Of course, the Coronavirus continues to dominate the news cycle around the world, and by extension, the sporting world, including the first positive test in the NHL that came from the Ottawa Senators and led to concerns for their most recent opponents the Ducks and Kings.
  • The ECHL and all leagues in the CHL are moving from being suspended to cancelled. Additionally, the IIHF 2020 Men’s World Championships that were set to take place in Switzerland have been cancelled.
  • How organizations were approaching the payment of their part-time employees dominated social media this week, including the plan of the Montreal Canadiens.

Segment 2: The Big Topic

  • Taking a look at some storylines that emerged out of this season, Rick and Joe discuss how the communications department for the Canadiens have been rather noticeably searching for a good news story for this season and have often exaggerated to do it. A recent example comparing the production of Phillip Danault to Connor McDavid is a prime example of this. They also look at Geoff Molson’s interactions with Montreal media on Twitter.
  • Who will be the fall guy for this season should there be one, since Marc Bergevin and Claude Julien will both be back? Could it be Trevor Timmins or Kirk Muller shouldering the blame for this season’s shortcomings? The guys discuss.

Segment 3: Have Your Say

This Week’s Show

Segment 1: Week in Review, Habs News, League News

  • The Canadiens played in a pair of games this week, they were both losing efforts to the Panthers and Predators. Rick and Joe briefly recap those games and discuss the scheduled game against Buffalo that was postponed on Thursday, along with the other 9 games scheduled for that night.
  • Some news on the injury front, Jesperi Kotkaniemi suffered a spleen injury and is set to miss the remainder of this season. Tomas Tatar, who had been dealing with an uppe body injury was announced to be out indefinitely. Jonathan Drouin was prepared to return, which led to the re-assigning of Lukas Vejdemo to Laval.
  • Cole Caufield’s season at Wisconsin has come to an end. With his Badger teammates K’Andre Miller and Alex Turcotte signing their Entry Level Contracts, the focus has shifted to Caufield and where he will head next season.
  • Claude Julien noted that he believed rookie forward Nick Suzuki had hit a wall. The guys discuss another comment made by the coach towards his players.
  • The Coronavirus has obviously been at the forefront this week. Following the NBA suspending their season Wednesday night, after Utah Jazz center, Rudy Gobert, tested positive for Coronavirus, the NHL and just about every other sports league followed suit the following day in postponing, suspending or cancelling major sporting events. Rick and Joe discuss everything surrounding these shocking events.

Segment 2: The Big Topic

  • Rick and Joe are joined by Mike who was in Vancouver this past June for the NHL Entry Draft with the Rocket Sports Media group, as one of the contest winners! The guys talk with Mike about the experience of the draft, his early hockey memories and much, much more.

This Week’s Show

Segment 1: Week in Review, Habs News, League News

  • The Canadiens played three games this week, picking up a pair of wins against the Carolina Hurricanes and New York Islanders, while dropping a game to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Rick and Joe discuss the week that was for the Habs.
  • There was some sad news Friday morning regarding Habs legend Henri Richard. He passed away at the age of 84. The guys pay tribute to the Canadiens legend who holds the NHL record for most Stanley Cups won with 11.
  • NHL Commisioner, Gary Bettman, met with the media to discuss a wide range of topics, including the NHL’s policy on the Coronavirus, the Salary Cap and some potential rule changes.
  • It was another eventful week on the injury front for the Canadiens. Forwards, Tomas Tatar and Brendan Gallagher did not take part in the Habs 4-0 loss to the Lightning, Gallagher suffering from the flu, while Tatar was sent back to Montreal to be evaluated. The Canadiens recalled Lukas Vejdemo from the Laval Rocket on an emergency basis due to the Tatar injury. Meanwhile, in Laval, Jesse Ylonen is not ready to play just yet, while Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Ryan Poehling are injured.
  • Marc Bergevin has been making quite a few media appearances over the last week, giving his perspective on the rather disappointing season for his club. In an interview with Renaud Lavoie, it was announced that Claude Julien would be returning behind the bench next season. In his 31 Thoughts article, Eliotte Friedman shared quotes from an interview he had with Bergevin.

Henri Richard (Photo by Canadiens.com)

Segment 2: The Big Topic

  • Who is responsible for this season’s shortcomings for the Montreal Canadiens? With the head coach and GM both returning next season, and placing a hefty amount of the blame on the players, Rick and Joe take a closer look at this season and what has let the Canadiens down this season. Some problem items have been the team’s propensity to give up leads late in games, their home record and backup goaltending, just to name a few.
  • Who might be the fall guy for this season should there be one? Kirk Muller? Trevor Timmins? As Bergevin hinted last week perhaps it will be a player, most likely a forward, in an attempt to acquire help on the blueline.

Segment 3: Have Your Say

This Week’s Show

Segment 1: Week in Review, Habs News, League News

  • The Canadiens were in action three times this week. They visited the Senators in Ottawa and picked up a 3-0 win, before dropping two games against the Canucks and Rangers, in which they jumped out to an early two-goal lead before allowing both teams to come from behind and win the game.
  • There were some great good news stories that came out of this week around the NHL. David Ayres’ captivated the imaginations of people around the world with his performance as an emergency backup goaltender, Bobby Ryan scored a hat-trick in his first game back in Ottawa since he went to the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program, and Jay Bouwmeester returned to St. Louis and received a lovely ovation following his cardiac episode in Anaheim.
  • News on the injury front just keeps coming for the Montreal Canadiens. Victor Mete is out for the remainder of the season after suffering a foot fracture. Jonathan Drouin continues to deal with an ankle injury, while Xavier Ouellet is close to returning.
  • The Canadiens recalled Charles Hudon on an emergency basis. Jake Evans was also recalled. Karl Alzner and Xavier Ouellet were sent down, but only as paper transactions to ensure their eligibilty for the AHL Playoffs, should Laval make it. Meanwhile, Canadiens prospect Jesse Ylonen is reportedly set to join the Laval Rocket.
  • Claude Julien faced some criticism for the load Carey Price has carried this season. He was quick to dismiss the notion when asked about it following the Canadiens loss against the Rangers. He continued to show his frustration with the lack of success, while giving praise to Marc Bergevin, saying his decisions are “strategic”.

Segment 2: The Big Topic

  • The Trade Deadline has come and gone and the Canadiens were relatively active. They traded Ilya Kovalchuk to Washington for a 3rd the night before the deadline, before trading both Nate Thompson and Nick Cousins on deadline day.
  • The moves that weren’t made were perhaps more notable, the Canadiens opted to keep both Jeff Petry and Tomas Tatar. Rick and Joe take a look at how Marc Bergevin handled the deadline period and take a listen to some of his comments at his press conference following the deadline.

Segment 3: Have Your Say

This Week’s Show

Segment 1: Week in Review, Habs News, League News

  • The Canadiens had quite the week. After dropping their game against the Dallas Stars, in controversial fashion, the Habs lost to the league-worst Detroit Red Wings for the fourth time this season. They followed that up with an improbable win over the Washington Capitals in OT.
  • The Canadiens got some help this week with the returns of Shea Weber and Paul Byron, with Jake Evans being sent back down to Laval to make room for the latter. Unfortunately, they lost Victor Mete and Xavier Ouellet to injury. Karl Alzner was also recalled on an emergency basis.
  • Claude Julien’s frustration is beginning to manifest itself in less than ideal ways. Saying he can’t put his sakets on and “do it for them”, before scratching Artturi Lehkonen in the game against Washington, to the surprise of Lehkonen’s teammates. Is the writing on the wall for Claude Julien after this week?

Segment 2: The Big Topic

  • The Trade Deadline is nearly upon us and as such there have already been some trades, some involving the Montreal Canadiens and some that hit close to home for the Habs.
  • The Canadiens traded Marco Scandella for a 2020 2nd round pick and a conditional 2021 4th round pick. They also made an AHL transaction with Pittsburgh, sending Phil Varone and Riley Barber to Pittsburgh for Joseph Blandisi and Jacob Lucchini.
  • Heading towards Monday’s deadline, questions remain about how Marc Bergevin will approach the cases of Ilya Kovalchuk, Tomas Tatar and Jeff Petry in particular. While Nate Thompson seems very likely to be dealt.
  • There has been speculation linking Montreal to players like Jake Bean of the Carolina Hurricanes, Ryan Graves and Samuel Girard of the Colorado Avalanche and Samuel Poulin of the Penguins.
  • Some trades of note from around the league include: Ondrej Kase to the Bruins, Brenden Dillon to the Capitals, Dylan Demelo to the Jets, Blake Coleman to the Lightning and Jason Zucker to the Penguins.

This Week’s Show

Segment 1: Week in Review, Habs News, League News

  • It was another busy week for the Montreal Canadiens. They played in four games against the Leafs, Coyotes, Bruins and Penguins, beating the Leafs while dropping the contests to Arizona, Boston and Pittsburgh.
  • The Zdeno Chara cross-check to Brendan Gallagher’s neck was the talk of the league following the Habs loss to the Bruins. Chara was fined $5,000 by the Department of Player Safety for the dangerous play.
  • An event that was overshadowed by Chara’s dross-check, Brad Marchand speared Jeff Petry. The Bruins were in vintage form in that game.
  • What’s been going on with Max Domi? Rick and Joe discuss the uninspired play we’ve seen from Domi of late and the idea of trading the 25-year-old which has gained some traction.
  • Alex Galchenyuk was traded from the Penguins to the Wild, as part of a package to acquire Jason Zucker. Minnesota will be Galchenyuk’s fourth team in his young career. The guys look back at his time in Montreal and some myths that surround Galchenyuk.
  • Renaud Lavoie shared his thoughts on Marc Bergevin’s, giving him praise for the unsuccessful offer sheet he tabled for Sebastian Aho.

Segment 2: The Big Topic

  • The Habs will be without their captain Shea Weber for four to six weeks, as he recovers from a high ankle sprain. It was an announcement that came after a lot of media speculation and a rather contentious media scrum with Claude Julien. Rick and Joe take a look at the lack of transparency when it comes to injuries.
  • Jonathan Drouin returned to action against the Maple Leafs after a prolonged absence. In the four games since his return, Drouin has gone pointless and is -5.

This Week’s Show

Segment 1: Week in Review, Habs News, League News

  • We’re right back in the swing of things following the All-Star break. The Habs played four games this week, winning games over Florida, New Jersey and Anaheim, while dropping a contest against Columbus. The Canadiens have won eight of their last 11 games.
  • Taking a look at goaltending this week, Carey Price had a great week between the pipes, Charlie Lindgren picked up a win in Price’s absence, Michael McNiven is back with the Laval Rocket and Keith Kinkaid is still in Laval and not exactly happy about it.
  • In the shootout win over the Devils, fans were quite critical of Lindgren, who made phenomenal saves throughout, but allowed goals that some fans did not like. Rick and Joe discuss the reaction to Lindgren’s performance, and what a reasonable expectation is for a goaltender not named Carey Price.
  • After the Athletic had their NHL player’s poll a few weeks ago, this time it’s the agents turn to give their thoughts on NHL executives, amongst other things.
  • Geoff Molson’s feud with members of the Montreal media is ongoing.
  • An update on Jesperi Kotkaniemi and the Laval Rocket.
  • Looking at the latest developments in the Trois-Rivières story.

Segment 2: The Big Topic

  • The Canadiens have been dealing with a nasty flu bug that has been working its way through the locker room. Additionally, the loss of Habs captain Shea Weber to injury has not helped.
  • We wondered earlier this season if the Canadiens would have the same luck with the injury bug that they did last season when they were relatively unscathed and though they have not been affected as drastically as other teams, they’ve still had some unfortunate luck with injuries.
  • In addition to the flu and the loss of Shea Weber, the Canadiens are still awaiting the return of Jonathan Drouin who has been cleared for contact since the end of January. Claude Julien says they are waiting on Drouin to tell the Canadiens when he feels ready to rejoin the lineup.

This Week’s Show

Segment 1: Week in Review, Habs News, League News

  • The Canadiens returned to action following their bye week and the All-Star break. They played in two games against the Washington Capitals and Buffalo Sabres, losing at home against the Capitals, but picking up a win in Buffalo.
  • The Habs have some positive news on the injury front. Brendan Gallagher returned to action in Buffalo, picking up a goal in his return, while Jonathan Drouin’s return seems imminent.
  • Ilya Kovalchuk scored again in the Canadiens’ win over the Sabres, bringing his total to five goals in a Habs uniform and nine points in his 10 games played with the club. With each passing game, his trade value increases a little bit more.
  • Carey Price won the Molson Cup for the month of January. His 42 starts ranks first amongst goaltenders in the NHL. After signing Keith Kinkaid with the idea that he would be the answer and provide Price with some valuable rest, the Canadiens have been unable to give him that rest.
  • Geoff Molson announced a “major restructuring” for group CH.
  • Laval was awarded the 2021 AHL All-Star game.
  • Dale Weise played his 500th NHL game against the Capitals on Monday, registering a goal in the contest to commemorate his milestone.

Segment 2: The Big Topic

  • Young players take the spotlight this week, as they should for the remainder of this season for the Montreal Canadiens. Yet, Jesperi Kotkaniemi was a healthy scratch in the Habs game against the Sabres and Cale Fleury had been a scratch in the Canadiens’ last four games, before being assigned to Laval on Friday.
  • With Claude Julien’s history with young players, Rick and Joe take a look at how he’s handled Kotkaniemi and Fleury, along with other young players like Nick Suzuki and Ryan Poehling this season.
